What you just did violates your contract!

In a new book by HCPro, Inc., Beyond the Contract: Managing Your Relationship with a Healthcare Payer, it states: “Like most providers, you probably dread having to cope with the administrative hassle of dealing with a plan that pays you incorrectly. But if you are confident that your claim is valid and correct, there’s a tactic you can use to bypass that hassle and get paid more quickly, experts say. Resolving this issue can be as simple as sending the plan a notice that the nonpayment or underpayment violates the contract. This will often work to prod the plan to pay you appropriately, says managed care consultant Maria K. Todd.”

So, if you are one of these plans who receive this notice, what do you do? Is this true? Is the contract really being violated? How do you know? What do you do next? How many contracts does this affect?

The current legislation that will change our nation’s health care system already has everyone pretty anxious. As we cited in our article, Dramatic Changes to Hospital Contract Administration, Hospital administrators will need to renegotiate or amend existing contracts for the terms that began in September, as well as for several provisions that take effect in future plan years.

Maybe this is a good time to take a peek at all those contracts and see what ugly little things lurk inside? Of course, this is easier said than done if you don’t have a really good system for managing your contracts.
