Contract Complexity – What’s it costing you?

In our Blog, When Fragmentation is Good, we wrote about the benefits of fragmentation. And, maybe we are really on to something. Fragmentation is one of those words that gets a bad rap, but technology systems that truly perform tend to focus on automating a specific business function.

We were just reading an article from Roger Sessions — CTO of Object Watch. He claims that the complexity of our IT systems will be our undoing. He states that large, expensive, complex IT projects are more likely to fail than smaller more agile and flexible ones. He even goes so far as to put a dollar value on it — systems approaching $2 million have only a 50% chance of succeeding. He does admit that the high failure rate is more a function of complexity than cost.

Intuitively this makes sense. We can all relate to too much complexity leading to confusion. Many IT Managers will tell you that it’s confusing business rules and policies that drive complex and expensive IT projects. Simplify the business and you’ll spend less money with a greater odds of success.

When it comes to automating contract management processes, that’s easier said than done. Contract negotiations by nature can be quite complex, which requires a technology solution that can deal with complexity in a very simple way.

What? Is that even possible?

Well, we think so. It requires going about the rigor to understand and document the business rules that govern the effort required to achieve the desired outcome. After that, the rest is gravy.
